Course Description
Target Audience: Professional law enforcement staff at all levels, including line-level employees, supervisors, and managers in records, property and evidence, administrative services, communications, and other support divisions.
Description:
Communication happens constantly in professional law enforcement environments, but that does not mean it is always effective. Conversations are often softened, avoided, or over-explained, leading to repeated issues, unclear expectations, and frustration across teams.
Whether it is a supervisor repeating the same direction, an employee unsure how to speak up, or coworkers avoiding direct conversations, the result is the same. The message does not stick.
This course provides practical tools to communicate clearly, address issues directly, and navigate
conversations at every level of the organization in a way that promotes clarity, accountability, and consistency.
Students will learn how to:
- Communicate clearly so expectations are understood the first time
- Recognize and correct communication habits that lead to confusion or repeated conversations
- Apply active listening and adjust tone and delivery to improve how messages are received
- Address issues directly and professionally, including handling pushback, defensiveness, and emotional responses
- Bring forward problems with thoughtful preparation, possible solutions, and clear communication
- Navigate peer conflict and workplace tension with greater confidence and professionalism
- Support a culture of accountability, clarity, and effective communication across the team
The course blends practical communication strategies with realistic professional law enforcement scenarios and interactive exercises based on everyday workplace challenges.
