Course Description

Target Audience: Newly promoted supervisors, acting supervisors, and emerging leaders in law enforcement support units, including records, property and evidence, administrative services, compliance, communications, and other professional staff divisions.

Description:

Promoting from within a law enforcement support unit is one of the most challenging transitions in a professional environment. One day you are part of the team. The next, you are responsible for leading it. Navigating that shift requires more than a title change. It requires confidence, communication skills, accountability, and the ability to lead former peers with professionalism and consistency.

This full-day course prepares new supervisors to step into their role with clarity and credibility.

Students will learn how to:

  • Establish expectations early and set the tone for accountability
  • Navigate changing relationships and former peer dynamics
  • Build credibility and earn respect through consistency and follow-through
  • Address performance and conduct issues directly and professionally
  • Adapt communication styles so messages are clearly received, not just delivered
  • Manage difficult conversations with confidence and clarity
  • Identify leadership and communication styles and adjust to lead others effectively
  • Recognize and respond to trust, gossip, and workplace culture challenges
  • Develop mentorship habits and begin building future leaders
  • Utilize professional organizations and networking opportunities to support long-term growth

The course blends practical leadership strategies with realistic law enforcement scenarios, communication exercises, room discussion, and interactive breakout sessions focused on the real challenges new supervisors face during the transition from peer to leader.
